The good and the bad about free logo makers?

Updated: Jan 14, 2023

Logo makers provide a fast and cheap way to produce a logo.

Logo robots are not as great as they seem to be

The debate around whether to use a free logo maker or not has been ongoing for many years. It is easy to see why this is the case.

There are a number of drawbacks to be aware of when considering the use of a free logo maker. This blog will discuss the pros and cons of free logo makers in order to help you make an informed decision about whether to use one or not.

This blog will discuss the pros and cons of free logo makers in order to help you make an informed decision about whether to use one or not.

The positives of using a free logo maker are few

The good about free logo makers is that they enable people to produce a logo quickly and cheaply. They are user-friendly and easy to use, so even those with limited design experience can make a logo in minutes. They also provide a huge range of design elements, so creating something unique and eye-catching is relatively straightforward.

Drawbacks of using a free logo maker

There are a number of drawbacks to be aware of when considering the use of a free logo maker. Logo robots cannot search for what is unique about a brand name, history or target market. This means that the logo produced is unlikely to be truly reflective of the company it is designed for. They also cannot give creative examples of how to use a logo, which can leave the logo looking generic and uninspired. Furthermore, they cannot be creative in how to use a colour palette, so the logo may end up looking dull and unappealing.

Using a free logo maker has the potential to be damaging to a brand

It is important that a logo is a true representation of the company and its values, otherwise, it risks coming across as generic and unprofessional. Unfortunately, a logo produced with a free logo maker may not be effective in creating a strong brand identity. Worst of all, a logo made by a logo robot cannot be registered, as someone else (even in the same industry!) might have exactly the same logo!

A human being can offer more than a free logo maker can

A person can read between the lines and offer creative solutions that a logo maker simply cannot. They can also use their experience to ensure that the logo is effective in communicating the brand’s message. You can of course check out the logo robots' "creations" in order to see what others are doing so that you can avoid using the same or similar ideas.

I recently saw the desperate post of an entrepreneur in the real estate business, who had found out that a competitor had exactly the same logo as her. She was asking for advice on how to stop the competitor from using "her" logo. As you can guess, she had used a free logo maker. I had to explain that there was nothing she could do but start from scratch, preferably with a designer.

In conclusion, free logo makers are a fast and cost-effective way to produce a logo. However, there are a number of drawbacks associated with this method. They cannot search for what is unique about a brand, nor can they be creative in how to use a colour palette. In most cases, it may be wiser to invest in the services of an experienced designer. The worst is probably that the logos a robot creates cannot be registered.
